Karachi (by Muhammad Tashfin): Initial information indicated at least six attackers were in the neighbourhood when gunmen stormed the Karachi Police office at Shahrah-e-Faisal, according to Aaj News. Currently, a counterterrorism operation is in progress.
TTP has claimed responsibility for the attack in a message sent by their spokesman
The police office’s staff had already barred all entrances and turned out the lights. But later reports said that the armed suspects had succeeded in getting inside.
Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of Sindh, reported that three of the building’s five stories had been demolished. It was still too early to confirm casualties, he stressed, although two floors and the rooftop were still standing.
Several explosions and constant firing have also been reported as police closed off traffic on the city’s major route. According to initial accounts, the attack occurred shortly after 7 p.m.
In an attempt to secure the area, large contingents of Rangers, police teams, and rescue services have arrived.
A member of the rescue services team was hurt and was sent to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Hospital (JPMC).
Initially, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah claimed that assailants gained access to the building’s third floor.
“They launched a missile towards the structure. “We are currently unable to reach the police personnel inside the building,” the minister said as the scenario unfolded to a private news channel, SAMAA TV.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has requested that additional security personnel be sent to the region to help handle the situation.
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, also the co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party that leads the government in Sindh, condemned the “terrorist attack on Karachi police Office”.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement given to journalists by their spokesman.
