Gold edged above $1,750 an ounce on Wednesday, holding up against a subdued dollar as investors looked ahead to US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech later today that could guide the rates outlook.
Meanwhile, investors remain cautious as Fed officials signaled that interest rates will continue to rise well into next year to get ahead of inflation.
Still, the Fed is widely expected to slow the pace of its rate hike to 50 basis points in December after delivering four straight 75 basis point increases.
Investors also look ahead to a raft of US economic reports this week, highlighted by a key monthly jobs report on Friday.
Gold is highly sensitive to the rates outlook as higher interest rates raise the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion, denting its appeal.
