Lahore High Court ruling stops LDA from proceeding with multiple road projects at same time

On Friday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an order prohibiting the Lahore Construction Authority (LDA) from carrying out parallel development projects on major city thoroughfares.

During a hearing on an illegal building case, Justice Shahid Karim directed the LDA to cover nine major highways with greenery and rooftop gardening, as well as to hire the best environmental experts to combat the city’s heatwave.

The LDA’s Director General (DG), Amir Ahmad Khan, appeared in court and provided findings on the environmental and illegal structures. After finishing the current project, Justice Karim directed the LDA to start a new one while also planning for climate change to avoid heat waves.

The DG informed the court that the LDA is undertaking initiatives to improve the city’s environment, including the improvement of major boulevards in Allama Iqbal Town and Johar Town. He also promised to plant five trees for every one that was felled during development projects.

The court praised Amir Ahmad Khan’s efforts and summoned the MD of Lahore Parking Company for a subsequent hearing, ordering all associated institutions to fully support the LDA.
